Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
FTD applies the first rule that matches. A rule an earlier one covers is never evaluated as written, so it decides nothing; a rule a later one repeats decides its connections as that later rule would, so removing it changes nothing. Either way a reviewer is misled about what the policy allows.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- In FMC (or cdFMC): Policies > Access Control > edit the policy > delete the covered rule. If it was meant to take precedence over an earlier rule that covers it, move it above that rule instead. Show Rule Conflicts lists the pair on 7.x. Save, Deploy.
- In FDM: Policies > Access Control > reorder or delete the rule, then Deploy.
Command line
This analyzer version writes no command text for this control. The steps above are the remediation it offers.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the covering rule's inspection and logging are what the covered one intended.
Limits
- Rules with a monitor action, interactive block, source ports, or values the reading does not hold are not compared.
Compliance references
No benchmark recommendation is mapped to this control in this version.
